Sub-Neptunes, planets between Earth and Neptune in size, are the most common planets in the galaxy, yet absent from our Solar System. Understanding their nature means linking their observable atmospheres to their interiors, since atmospheres are shaped by chemistry, aerosols and interactions with the interior. Without advanced coupled models and experimental data for high-pressure/temperature conditions, atmospheric observations cannot reveal their interior structure.
This RAS Specialist Discussion meeting focuses on atmosphere-interior interaction studies, both numerical and experimental. We will cover topics such as convection and chemistry as fingerprints of interior structure of sub-Neptunes, comparative planetology: Uranus and Neptune as sub-Neptune analogues, high-pressure equations of state, experimental uncertainties and how they translate to exoplanet models/observations, and modelling hierarchy: from coupled 1D atmosphere-interior models to 3D general circulation models. The meeting will bring together exoplanet and Solar System scientists, modellers, geochemists and high-pressure physicists to identify key uncertainties and set future observational, experimental and theoretical priorities.
